Description

Krispijn van den Dries envisions a future where everyone plays a role in food production, fostering a deep connection between farming and nature. He advocates for a radical shift in agriculture—one that minimizes external inputs, utilizes local resources, and integrates farming with natural ecosystems. To bring this vision to life, he calls on citizens, governments, and financial institutions to support pioneers in sustainable farming, ensuring that energy, funding, and expertise are directed toward building a resilient food system.

His farm, Metamorphosis, embodies this philosophy of transformation, symbolized by the life cycle of a butterfly. The farm follows a diverse crop rotation system, including potatoes, alfalfa, cabbage, onions, carrots, winter cereals, peas, and Chinese cabbage. Soil health is central to Krispijn’s approach, with green manure covering 90% of the farm after harvest and a mix of plowing techniques used only in spring. Organic inputs such as compost, bokashi, compost tea, and ferments enhance soil fertility, supporting a thriving, biodiverse ecosystem.

Beyond crop cultivation, Krispijn is committed to enhancing the farm’s ecological resilience. This winter, he plans to plant six kilometers of hedges, designed to reach up to two meters in width, providing windbreaks, habitat for wildlife, and improved soil stability. Through these efforts, Metamorphosis represents a living model of agricultural change—one that prioritizes biodiversity, soil regeneration, and a collaborative food system that benefits both people and the planet.
