Description

Founded by Kees de Gruiter in 2023, Underground Forest BV pioneers carbon storage by embedding sustainably sourced spruce logs into clay or peat soils in the Netherlands. Partnering with forestier Geoffrey Huet and heiers Arie Hogendoorn and René Muit, the process ensures a seamless chain from forest to soil, supporting long-term carbon removal.

A loan from CarbonFix jumpstarted Underground Forest's operations, enabling the removal and storage of 1,000 tons of CO2. CarbonFix supports innovations that permanently sequester CO2, aligning perfectly with Underground Forest’s mission.

Underground Forest combines carbon dioxide removal (CDR) with soil stabilization in delta regions, creating foundation-ready land. On 1,000 hectares, up to 20 megatons of CO2 can be stored, providing a base for over 40,000 homes.

The durability of wooden foundations, as seen in Venice, inspires Underground Forest. With over 10 million wooden poles supporting its structures for centuries, this method demonstrates the longevity of submerged wood in anaerobic conditions.

Building on decades of research, Underground Forest presents a practical, scalable solution to permanently remove CO2 and stabilize vulnerable soils, contributing to a sustainable future.
