Description

The Bamboo Village plantation in based in Uganda, about 150 kilometers northwest of Kampala. Planted with various bamboo species suitable for the local climate, it is maintained by local residents, providing jobs for the community, including women who might otherwise struggle to find work. Bamboo Village aims to create a bamboo-centric community, featuring bamboo houses and products made by local entrepreneurs, and serving as an eco-tourism centre.

Bamboo offers significant climate benefits, including rapid CO2 absorption and soil improvement. It enhances water absorption, protecting against flooding. The plantation preserves biodiversity by avoiding clear-cutting and maintaining ground-covering vegetation and the existing swamp. Bamboo Village was developed by Greenhouse Sustainability from Nieuwkoop, Netherlands.

About our carbon farmer

Henri, the owner of Greenhouse Sustainability, helps horticulture companies become more sustainable. In 2018, he visited Uganda, discovered bamboo's environmental benefits, and fell in love with the country. Inspired to make a significant impact, he leveraged his horticulture background to open a bamboo nursery. This venture, known as Bamboo Village, has since evolved into a multifaceted carbon removal project.
