Akkerbouwbedrijf Kaput, Regenerative Agriculture in The Netherlands
Kaput Arable Farm, a conventional peat colony farm in Bellingwolde, East Groningen, has been transitioning toward regenerative agriculture since 2020. By 2024, the farm can be considered regenerative, though it currently sells in the conventional market. Still in the transition period, each new step taken has led to noticeable improvements in soil health.
The farm’s primary focus is on eliminating harmful actions or choices that go against nature. By doing so, the soil is enhanced, ultimately yielding harvestable products rich in trace elements. The overarching goal is to produce food for the local population that contributes to human vitality. Significant reductions have already been made in the use of artificial fertilizers and crop protection products. However, transitioning away from these inputs requires the addition of resources that stimulate soil development and support crops through the growing season.
To mitigate risks related to disease or nutrient deficiencies, the farm utilizes ferments, vital manure, compost tea, and trace elements, all of which promote humus formation. Financing this transition period is partly achieved through CO₂ certificates. While many risks are involved—sometimes leading to unsuccessful choices—the farm acknowledges that without risk, there can be no progress. Kaput Arable Farm is preparing its entire 190-hectare operation for the future, actively capturing carbon and fostering humus formation. Humus serves as the foundation for the vitality of the entire living environment.
